SINGAPORE – A housing complex for elderly residents has beaten flashier competition to be named the World Building of the Year at the inaugural Dr Alan HJ Chan Spirit of Singapore Book Prize, which launched on April 18. The prize, established with a $1 million donation from Confucian scholar Alan Chan, aims to promote the writing of books that champion mindsets and values important to the shaping of Singapore. These include equality, diversity, religious harmony, meritocracy and pragmatism.

The first place winner of the 2022 Singapore Prize will receive a trophy and a grant of up to SGD 1 million, which can be used to fund research or development activities. The second and third place winners will each receive a trophy and SGD 100,000, while the fourth and fifth places will each win SGD 50,000. The top three winners will also be eligible for a chance to compete in the Grand Final in Beijing.
