The Winners of the Singapore Prize and the Harvard Prize Book

The winners of this year’s Singapore Prize — a competition that recognises outstanding published works in Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil — have been announced. Among the notable winners are a literary duo, a renowned historian and an academic from the National University of Singapore.

The heir to the British throne visited Singapore on Tuesday for his first solo trip since 2012. Prince William landed at Changi Airport, where a 40-meter-high indoor waterfall was lit green and a tree planted in his honor. The royal arrived in the heart of the city to focus on his Earthshot Prize — an initiative launched by his charity, the Royal Foundation, that seeks solutions to address global warming.

He also toured the National Museum of Singapore and had a lunch with the city’s mayor, who told him that the city has made impressive progress in its fight against climate change. “Singapore’s success story is one that is worthy of emulation by other cities in the world,” the mayor said.

At the end of his visit, the king posed for a selfie with some of the people who had lined up to greet him in a long line. He also addressed an audience of young students at the Lee Kuan Yew School, congratulating them on their achievements and urging them to continue to work hard and be steadfast in their endeavours.

HARVARD PRICE BOOK

This year’s Harvard Prize Book highlights pre-tertiary students who have shown great care for others in the community. The winning entries – from ITE students to members of the Singapore Armed Forces – are highlighted in the book, which will be sold at all major bookstores and the National Library.

The winner of the prestigious award will receive a full scholarship to Harvard, and an opportunity to join the exclusive Harvard Club of Singapore, which aims to inspire and connect students in the country with the idea that Harvard is an attainable institution of higher learning. The other finalists include a chemistry student who organised a project to show appreciation for Town Council cleaners during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an ITE graduate who helped run an outreach programme for elderly residents in his neighbourhood.

The inaugural Singapore Prize will be presented at a special ceremony hosted by the Harvard Club of Singapore, with the support of the Embassy of the United States in Singapore, on 19 April. The prize will recognise the contributions of individuals and organisations that have played an instrumental role in shaping Singapore into the green garden city it is today. The event is expected to be attended by more than 300 guests from various sectors, including business leaders and the Singapore government. The prize will be administered by the Harvard Foundation in New York and is supported by a number of donors, including the Singapore Economic Development Board and Temasek Holdings.
